Car-key programming charges explained

Short answer

Programming is the electronic work that lets a compatible replacement key operate the car's security or remote system. It isn't the same as cutting a blade or changing a fob battery. A programming fee may cover only that electronic work, or be part of a complete replacement quote. Ask whether the key itself is included and which functions will work afterwards.

Cutting and programming are different jobs

A cut blade may open a car without enabling it to start when the vehicle uses a coded anti-theft key. The finished replacement may need a suitable part, blade cutting, electronic registration and testing. The exact steps depend on the car; Services Explained does not provide programming instructions or security codes.

What might a programming charge include?

Programming may be included in a complete replacement-key price or charged separately. See Car key replacement costs in Melbourne for dated provider examples of complete replacement jobs; these figures do not show what programming alone costs.

Component

What to confirm

Engine-start authorisation

Does the fee include registering the coded key so the car will start, where required?

Remote / proximity functions

Are the applicable buttons or smart-key functions included for this vehicle?

Testing

Will the provider test both unlocking and starting, plus any required remote functions?

Other charges

Are the physical key or fob, blade cutting, attendance, GST and repeat visits included?

What changes the work?

A spare made while one working key remains may use a different process from replacing every lost key. See Spare car key or all keys lost: what's different? for the job comparison and Auto locksmith or dealership for a replacement car key? for choosing between provider pathways. A provider must confirm capability for your particular make, model, year and key system.

If a remote stops working

An unresponsive remote doesn't automatically need programming. Check the model-specific owner's guidance or ask for assessment before buying a full replacement. For online or customer-supplied parts, see Buying a replacement car key online: what to check first.

Two questions to ask

Replace bracketed placeholders before sending.

Is this price just for electronic programming, or does it include a complete key, cutting and testing? What would I pay if the supplied part cannot be programmed?
