Spare car key or all keys lost: what's different?
Short answer
Still have a working car key? Ask for a spare-key quote. Lost every usable key? Ask for an all-keys-lost replacement. The second job can need a different security or programming process, attendance at the vehicle or transport to a workshop. The details depend on the car and the key system.
Compare the two jobs
What to compare | Making a spare | All keys lost |
|---|---|---|
Starting point | One working key remains | No working key remains |
Replacement | An additional compatible key | A working replacement without an existing key |
Programming | Cutting and electronic registration where required | A different vehicle-specific process may be needed |
Where work happens | A workshop visit may be possible | A visit to the car or workshop transport may be needed |
Costs to check | Part, cutting, programming and testing | Those items, plus any attendance, transport or additional vehicle work |
Make sure the replacement starts the car
Some cars use coded anti-theft keys. A cut blade may open the door without authorising the engine to start. Ask whether the quote covers the complete key and required programming, including remote functions where applicable.
What if the key is there but the remote has stopped working?
A flat remote may be a battery or other fault rather than a lost key. Consult your car's owner manual or ask for an assessment before buying a complete replacement.
Should you get a spare before losing the last key?
Ask for a spare quote while you still have a working key. Compare the complete work and cost for your exact car, including programming, testing, attendance and GST. See Car key replacement costs in Melbourne for dated supplier examples; those different jobs don't establish a fixed saving.
